Questions

Questions.  We all live our lives with questions.  Some questions are important and we have to get answers.  Some questions are unimportant and we will search for answers when and if we get time.  Some questions we never even think to ask.   One thing that I learned about questions, for me at least, they rarely bring peace into life and right now I have a lot of questions.

I have questions in my personal life, my church life, my spiritual life and every other category of my life.  My personal life questions range from can I keep up this pace of working 2  jobs for another 9 months?  Will our financial situation get any better?  Where will my son end up going to college?  Will I ever get rid of this tired feeling?  There are so many personal questions.

I have questions in my church life as well. Were will the Bishop send me next July?  Will the people in the new church like me?  Will I like the new town that I live in?  If I don’t like the new town how can I learn to love it so I can minister effectively? Again, there are so many more questions especially about the church I serve possibly becoming a new church with two other churches.

I have questions about my spiritual life.  Will God never leave me or forsake me?  Oh, I know Jesus says he won’t, but can I really trust that?  Sometimes I wonder. Will I ever grow to a maturity where I don’t feel like a failure?  Will I… You get the point.  I have questions.

The problem for me, these questions don’t bring peace to my life and I need it.  The problem begs another question that I must get an answer for and that is: “How can I find peace for my heart and life even though I don’t have the answers?”

Do you have questions in your life that you are not getting answers too?  Do you wish you knew how to get peace even though you don’t seem to be getting answers either?  I think we can get some insight from Scripture and a quote. Let’s start with the Scripture first.

In Matthew 10, we find Jesus giving the disciples instructions for ministry.  As we read verse 26, Jesus says, “So do not be afraid of them.”  Who is them? Who is Jesus talking about?  Who are we not to be afraid of?”

The answer for this question is found in verse 17, “But beware of men; for they will hand you over to their councils and flog you in their synagogues.”  Jesus tells us not to be afraid of what people can do.  Now let’s jump back down to verse 29.  Here comes Jesus’ word of encouragement.

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?  Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.  And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”  These verses, 29-31, remind me and I hope it reminds you that God is watching over us.  Do we have questions?  Sure we have questions, but God is the God of the questions too.  He is the  God of the known and the unknown.

That brings me to the quote of encouragement I want to share with you from Corre Tam Boon.  She said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”  We might not have answers to our questions.  We might not know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future and fortunately for us, He holds our hand a well.

But that does lead to one last question in this blog post and that is “Do you know God?”  You see, you can’t entrust your future and receive His peace if you don’t know Him.  I want to give you one last encouragement today.   It is simple to say but can be hard to do.  Get to know God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  Get to know them through prayer, through fellowship with His people and through the Holy Scriptures.  If you do these things, then you can have peace even if all you have is questions.
