The other day I followed a link on Facebook that took me to a sign company. I was looking at signs that are made for churches. Of course, they did more than church signs. They also do light pole flags like the one on the left.
When I saw this picture, I became very nostalgic. Why you ask? Because I saw a glimpse of “home.” The image shows an essential building in the background. It is the Douglas County Court House on 11th and Massachusetts Street in Lawrence, Kansas; my boyhood home. The courthouse was a building I could see from my street corner on 11th and New Jersey Street. The courthouse was about 5 or 6 blocks West of where I grew up. I spent the first 25 years of my life not far from that building. I went there to get my first car tags. I also got pulled over for speeding just down from there on 11th street. I could be wrong, but I think my mom and dad even got married there back in 1955. Mom’s death certificate is on file there as well. For a second, when I saw the sign and the ol’ courthouse I wanted to go home.
While I don’t live in Lawrence any more and haven’t for quite some time, there is a part of me that still feels like Lawrence will always be “home.” I wish I could go there, but right now is not the time.
There is another place I want to call home. I get a glimpse of it from time to time kinda of like I did with the KU sign. This other home is not on earth and I have never been there. I have been told about it, and it seems like a beautiful place. As a pastor, I lead people in prayer that our world would become more like this home I have never seen. Yes, I am talking about heaven; the home that I have never seen.
I can’t wait to get there. There will be no more dying there. No more pain there. No more tears for they will all be wiped away. I can’t wait to get there. It’s where mom is waiting for me with my 4 or 5 siblings that I have never met. I can’t wait to meet them. But the person, I really want to see when I get to heaven is Jesus. Without Jesus, heaven could never be my home nor yours. With Jesus, not only is heaven your home but Jesus is your eldest brother. Your eldest brother has the name above all names. He is the king of Kings and the lord of Lords. We can only glimpse heaven now but a day is coming where all God’s children will get to see heaven for the first time and live there forever. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get Home.
