Evaluate and Adjust

Baseball is a game of evaluating and adjusting.  The coach evaluates how players have been playing and they adjust the batting order.  The infield gets an evaluation and will adjust where the position themselves on the infield depending on the hitter.  The pitching staff evaluates a pitchers performance and adjust by going to the bullpen for a relieve pitcher.

The evaluating that I did as catcher came in the form of seeing where in the batter’s box the hitter was going to stand.  Then I would adjust where the pitch was going to go.  For example, a batter comes up and stands way away from the plate.  I would adjust my glove telling the pitcher I wanted a pitch on the outside edge of the plate.  If the batter moves in close, I bring my glove close to the batter’s legs telling the pitcher that we were going to throw inside.  If the batter was way back in the box you might want to throw a curveball that breaks away from them at the last minute.  If the batter is up in the box, throw them heat because the ball will seem faster than it actually is because of where the batter is positioned.

In churches and in our own personal lives, we too need to evaluate and adjust, but we don’t.  Why?  Well, it’s not the evaluation that causes problems.  In most churches, they will evaluate a problem until they are blue in the face. Why?  Because the evaluation does not cause change.  Adjustment causes change.  You want people to be happy?  Don’t change anything.  People, in general, don’t like change.  The problem is without change there is no growth.

Let’s say you have not seen your new grandbaby in 8 months.  Your children bring their offspring over and first things said is “Oh my look how that baby has grown.”  Change is necessary for growth and as Christians, we are called to transformation which is a great big word for change.

Are you ready to evaluate and adjust your relationship with the Lord?  With others?  Are you ready to grow?  If so you will have to evaluate and adjust.
