From dust you are and from dust you shall return” are words that are heard every Ash Wednesday all around the world. They remind us that we will die. We have a destiny with dirt! But they remind us that we, human beings, are special. God took ordinary dust, dirt, clay, whatever you want to call it and created you.
The chemical compounds of the average person is worth close to $3.00. That’s it! Not even enough to buy a happy meal. For me the question becomes, “What gives us worth? It’s not the chemicals that we are made from? That’s only 3 bucks. What gives a person worth? I believe the answer is, as human beings, we are created in the image of God.
There is nothing else on earth, as far as we know, created in the image of God. Not our loving dog. Not our curios cat. Not the horse that runs like the wind. Nothing! Not even the angels are created in the image of God. Only humanity holds that title. God took ordinary dust. Created humanity in his image and now we are being told we will once again become dust.
From Dust You Are….What a minute!?! I thought human beings are special? What happen to all that created in the image of God stuff? How can we be special if we are going to become dust again? That’s a good question! I think it is a question that God wants us to contemplate during the season of Lent.
From Dust We Are To Dust You Will Return stops us in our tracks and causes us to ask, “There must be more to life than this? I can’t believe that God created me in his image to do nothing more than return to dust?
God didn’t create you to do nothing and then return to dust! What makes you special is the breath of God that animates your life. One day that breath of God that formed you; that gives you life today will be recalled by God. You will die and the breath of God that is you will stand before an almighty and holy God to give account for what you have done in this life.
From Dust You Are And To Dust You Will Return prods us to ask, “I am ready to see my maker if I am called home today?”
Are you?
