Not Comprehensive

In the book of Galatians, we find the Fruits of Spirit. Paul tells us that there are 9 Fruits that should be evident in the follower of Christ. But are these the only Fruits of the Spirit or could there be more?

I believe that an argument for be made that Paul’s list while vital is not necessarily comprehensive. There are more Fruits that could be on this list once.

Could Holiness be a Fruit of the Spirit? I think it could be a Fruit of the Spirit. Why? Well in the Old Testament we read,

44 For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming thing that crawls on the ground. 45 For I am the Lord who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.”

Leviticus 11:44-45

or

Leviticus 19:1-2

In the New Testament, Peter takes up the idea of being holy as God is Holy.

15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

I Peter 1:15-16

or in the Gospel of Matthew

You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew 5:48

You might add Justice (Isaiah 30:18) as a Fruit of the Spirit or Wisdom (Romans 16:27) or Forgiveness (Ephesians 1:7) or Humility (Matthew 11:29).

You get the idea. These are all characteristics of someone that follows Jesus Christ. Why didn’t Paul add these into the Galatians passage about the Fruits of the Spirit? I don’t know. Can we legitimately add them as possible Fruits of the Spirit, now? I think so and in the next blog post, we will explore why I believe that to be true.
