(Your Name), servant of…

close up photo of woman with her hands tied with rope There is something that we don’t like to admit in America.  What is it?  We don’t want to admit we are servants.  We like to think of ourselves as the ones in control. We are the strong.  We are powerful.  We are the superpower nation.  No one had better mess with us.  We are ones that are to be served! But in reality,  we are servants.  From the highest among us to the lowest of the low, we are all servants.

We serve something or someone.  Some serve money, power, or fame.  While others serve friends, family or loved ones.  But rest assured, we all serve.

Paul in Romans 1:1 tells us who he serves.  The passage starts, “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ.”  Actually, the Greek word used here is doulos. While the word does mean servant, it also means, “slave.”  “Paul, a slave of Jesus Christ.”  Paul thought of himself as a slave of Jesus!  Do we think of ourselves as slaves to Jesus?  Would our actions and attitudes about Him and those around us change if we thought of ourselves as slaves?

I hope and pray that I act like that I am a slave of Jesus Christ.  I would guess that most of the time I don’t.  Pray with and for me that I will become a servant of Jesus and I will pray for you to be able to write, ” (Your name) servant of Jesus Christ.”
