The couple in the picture are walking down the street with their pinky’s intertwined. I would guess that this picture made you think of pinky’s swearing (Well that and the title of this blog post.) I know that’s what I thought of when I saw it.
The pinky swear is the highest form swearing that two friends can do to seal a promise. You know how it goes. You and your friend have come to a difficult decision. You want to know that your friend won’t back out of the commit that has been made so what do you do? You make that person pinky swear.
They say that pinky swearing may have originated in Japan. The two would make their promise. They would pinky swear knowing that the consequence of breaking that promise was to cut off their pinky.
I wonder does God pinky swear with humanity? In one way, I think he does and did. I think we see that in Romans 1. Paul tells the reader that there was a promise that God made through the prophets in the Holy Scripture or what we now call the Old Testament.
God had made a promise starting in Genesis 3 that someday a Messiah would be born. As we read Holy Writ, we find that God makes more promises. For example, God promises King David that he would have a descendant on his throne that would rule forever. Messiah would come from the lineage of David and He did. God kept that promise. Paul is reminding here in Romans 1 about that promise and tells them God has not forgotten his promise. Jesus in the answer to that promise.
Has God promised you something? Know that he will do it. Have you promised someone something? If you want to be a good reflection of who Christ is I would suggest you do all you can to fulfill that promise especially if you pinky swear.
