Not So Much

This month we are supposed to be giving thanks. I have given thanks for people and times in my life. But to be real and honest with you today when it comes to being thankful…well…not so much. I known I should be and tomorrow I probably will be but tonight I can’t seem to push The thankful button.

Unfortunately, we all have days where we don’t feel thankful. We know we should but we’re not. How do we get through those days?

First I would say don’t punish yourself. We all have these kinds of days. When you have an unthankful day, I would encourage you to go to God and be honest with Him. God’s love for you goes far beyond your one day of not being thankful. Jesus still loves you.

Second make sure that your unthankfullness does not take up residency in your life. It’s one thing to have a day or two where being thankful is hard but it might be time to seek out professional help if it lasts weeks or months. Sometimes a lack of thankfulness is a sign of depression. Depression can make you feel like nothing will work out for you. The stress of making a living becomes to great and depression starts to set in. As depression grows it becomes increasingly difficult to find something, anything to be thankful for.

We may know in our minds we have plenty of reasons to be thankful. The heart full of depression can cloud the mind so it can’t see clearly. The mind can’t see all the blessings therefore It can’t recite them back to God. Remember don’t punish yourself.

Finally rehearse what God’s done for you that day. Some might say, “But Jesus didn’t do anything for me today.” The mere fact that you can respond to the question means God has done something for you. He has given you lungs and a physical heart that’s pumping blood. You are a live! As you continue to rehearse the “small things” you soon become thankful. Why? Because you will realize those small things are actually some of the best things to be thankful for.
