Have you strapped on the shin guards? Did you crisscross the straps to be cool? Have you put on the chest protector? Have you ever looked through the slot of the face mask as a pitch was hurled your way? Did you take the glove and “set it up” over the outside part of the plate? Have you put one finger down between your legs? Have you ever played catcher?
When I was young, that was my favorite position to play. As I reflect on my time squatting behind the plate, I realize that as a catcher, I had a unique view. I was the only player on the field who could see every other player. The pitcher could only see me. The infielders could see each other but not the outfielders. The outfielders could see the infielders, the pitchers and me but could not see each other without turning their heads. As catcher, I was the only player that could see every other player and that’s why the catcher get’s to call all the shots no the field. The catcher can see things that other players can’t see. Maybe that’s why when old catcher can bend their knees the go to the dugout and become managers. They have spent the whole career seeing things that the other players didn’t see and once older they continue doing that expect in the dugout.
The catcher’s view of the diamond is similar to God’s view of earth and each of our lives. Right now, I can see my wife sitting across from me. I can’t see my son, who is in his room. I can see any of the 1400 other people that live in my small community. I can’t see any of the other 325 million Americans or the 7 billion other people that occupy this planet with me, but God can! God can see each and every one of the inhabitants of this big blue marble, and he knows each person’s name. God can see things in our lives that we can’t see simply because he has a different view of the game of life than we do.
If God can see things in our lives that we can’t, wouldn’t it be a good idea to let Him call the shots? We can’t see everyone and everything but God can and he wants to do what is best for us and gives Him the most glory. Today, I want to encourage you to trust Jesus with your life for he has a catcher’s view of your life.
